The VGA connection that some rigs use has a 12 volt Molex 45558-0002 connector. This is obviously ideal for van power supplies. The current would need to be regulated, but it shouldn't be too difficult to find a suitable product to handle that. Avoiding the inverter = transformer overhead should save a bit of power, and reduce the solar requirement.
